Susan Florence Stornetta, age 84, of Silver City, Nevada, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025.
Born on January 16, 1941, to Sylvio B and Ruth W Watson Stornetta. Her family moved to Minden in 1956 and she graduated from Douglas County High School in 1958. She received two degrees from University of Nevada, Reno.
Susan was a lifelong artist and creative spirit. She explored countless forms of expression throughout her life, including baking, gardening, sewing, puppeteering, drawing, watercolor, and oil painting, playing the concertina, writing poetry and prose, dancing, yoga, and meditation. Her surroundings served as a constant source of inspiration – her artwork often featured her beloved garden and the mountains that framed her view.
Susan first came to the Comstock in 1959 and made her home in Silver City in 1974. She flourished during a time of renewal and transformation in the town, as it became a hub for artists, scientists, musicians, and craftspeople. With a deep commitment to civic life, she volunteered for numerous community efforts. She participated in local governance, guided by New England style town meetings, where residents made decisions by consensus. She found joy and a sense of belonging among like-minded neighbors who brought energy, creativity, and open-mindedness to Silver City.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, James Allander, her children, Sam Toll and Sarah Hinman, her six grandchildren, and her three great-grandchildren. Susan’s legacy lives on in the art she created, the garden she nurtured, and the community she helped build.
